When he died in April ofa little more than a month after his eightieth birthday, he had not yet completed his second. In the interim, he became the best known and most influential one-book novelist in American literary history. What I can talk about are some of the various interests, ghosts, and other throughlines that make their way through these essays. Regardless, his essays on literature are so very good.
